Sticky posts

September 9, 2008

I see the wonderful WordPress people have finally implemented a “sticky posts” feature for blogs.

Excellent! Well done!

Ideal for pinning a post that’s remaining topical to the front page. So thought I’d give it a trial run with one of my posts of yesterday, “Fine Art” Photography?

Mainly cos the post appears to have attracted some reasonable and interesting discussion… with potential for it to continue for a little while maybe. If there’s no new comments added after a week or so than I’ll relegate it back to its rightful position.

;)

Hoo-bloody-ray!

September 5, 2008

Its now 0648 on Friday morning… and I’ve got my internet connection back! (See this post)

And without having to reconfigure my machines. Proving beyond any possibility of doubt that as I’d said, right from the start, it was a network fault and not a local one (i.e., mine)!

So, about time too.

Only downside is, I was just on the verge of drafting a really snotty email (to be sent via my works internet connection) to my ISP… and now they’ve deprived me of the satisfaction. Dammit!

But on balance I think I’m probably quite content tranquil (!) again.

Ahhh… the bliss!

Not meant to be!

June 12, 2008

It may have appeared that I’ve been a bit busy the past coupla weeks or so, and that impression’s not wrong… but not half as busy as I should have been, or planned to be!

For last Monday what I really meant to do, and wanted to do, was wander up to Doncaster for a noise demo there in connection with the proposed open cast mine that I blogged about at the end of last month.

But Doncaster’s miles an’ miles from where I am, and getting there’s no easy task. Basically, although its north of me the train journey entails travelling down to London (St Pancras station), then quickly skipping across to Kings Cross station, and back up to Doncaster.
And cos of the bizarre railway system we have here, a number of different companies operate trains… and there’s the rub. For the cheapest ticket meant travelling solely on one particular company’s trains, which would have proven to be extremely restrictive. But getting a ticket enabling me to travel on any train cost a small fortune, running literally into three figures.
Which, stupidly and not totally untypically, I didn’t find out about until just a few days beforehand, and basically I simply couldn’t afford it. Particularly as I’d only just splashed out (the week before) on the Brighton jaunt.

Damn! That’ll warn me about adopting causes so many miles from home ground!

So went to Cambridge instead (see last post).

But all was not lost! For a mate was there (Doncaster, that is) and shot some pics, and has done a write-up here.

If the environment’s your thing, be sure to check it out.

In an earlier post I related how I’d been trying out the new “Monotone Photoblog Theme”, but without much success. Basically, I couldn’t get the pics to display.

Well, the designer of the theme, Noel, very kindly added a comment to that post, offering to help sort the problem out.

There was an exchange of emails, then nothing much for a coupla days cos he was otherwise occupied, as was I. Then I get another email from him asking me to create a new post on the test blog and send him the resulting code. Which I dutifully do (create the post, that is). And lo and behold, it works!

And I think I may have identified the problem. It seems to be in the underlying code for the post, in the “img class” tag. Seems the attribute wp-image- requires a value of 6, whereas in the test posts I did that didn’t work the value mysteriously appeared as 3.

Dunno how the error crept in but I’m mighty pleased its now resolved, and great appreciation to Noel for his offer of help.
(I can’t recollect having changed that particular attribute of the tag, but knowing me anything’s possible. On the other hand, the tag is generated automatically on hitting the “insert into post” button on the uploader, so perhaps there’s been some tinkering going on behind the scenes? But whatever, I just knew it had to be something simple!)

Only dilemma now is, shall I deploy the new theme on the “faves of the month” blog or stick with the one I used as a temporary fill-in (and for which I’ve developed a bit of a liking)?

Or maybe set up another blog entirely with the new theme, for a different class of pics? Hmm…

[Edit 10th May '08: Hmm... all that stuff about the value of the wp-imag- attribute of the img class tag's a load of rubbish! Having uploaded a few images now seems that value changes. Looks as though I'll have to investigate further. What this really means of course is that I still don't have a clue why the theme's working now whereas it wasn't before!]

Hmm, I wonder…?

Recollecting my earlier post about the window-dresser’s dummy I happened to pass by the same shop window again yesterday (in fact, I pass it virtually every week, but that’s neither here nor there).

And couldn’t help glancing at the display.

And couldn’t help noticing that the display was the same as last week.

Apart from there now being something draped over the dummy’s knees!

Much more respectable, and much more in keeping with the tastefulness/stylishness of the rest of the display.

And much more in keeping with that particular High Street store’s reputation.

Site stuff

April 29, 2008

No, panic not, I’m not thinking about changing the theme again. (Well, maybe I’ve thought about it a coupla times, but I doubt that I shall do it. Not in the immediate future, anyway.)

No, this is about something else entirely.

Thanks to the amazing WordPress folk I’ve managed to acquire a new domain name for this blog, which I’ll probably start flashing around at all my various places on the Web. Although the blog will still be available at fotdmike.wordpress.com, that address is actually now redirecting to www.fotdmike.com! Cool, eh?

Oh glee… yet another domain name to add to my growing collection.

Also, I’ve implemented an email contact form on this site so anyone who wants to email me (not that I’m encouraging it you understand, nor even assuming that anyone would actually be foolish enough to want to do that) can do so without leaving this site. The form’s to be found on both the Copyright and the About Me pages.

(Be warned though, I customarily take ages to reply to emails… if indeed I remember to do so at all!)

And finally, I’ve also updated the Flickr an’ Me page to reflect the current situation a propos using them to host/share my pics.

Just added another wordpress.com blog to the blogroll… “One Eye on the Road“.

This blog’s a mate’s of a mate sorta thing, and well worth a visit if you’re interested in photographers’ rights, particularly as they relate to photojournalism and “news gathering” in the UK.

Also lots of photo-coverage of political/social/environmental activism events.

Check it out!
