Damn lying LCD!

Bedford Park in November _G101032

Yesterday’s little jaunt (Tuesday, that’d be) started off with a trek to Bedford Park where mate and I snared loadsa pics.

Dunno about his yet, but all of mine looked absolutely super… on the camera’s LCD.
But back home and get them all transferred to the infernal machine and… er… a slightly different story emerged. Basically, I seem to have ended up with a bunch of crap. Damn lying LCD!

Mind you, it was a miserably grey day and to be honest its a bit of a task finding inspirational scenes when I already seem to have shot everything there umpteen times over. And the weather certainly wasn’t helping very much.

Managed to salvage a handful though, just to convey a slight sense of the Park in November.

Next stage of the outing however I fared somewhat better. Bedford Cemetery no less. Here the weather and the lighting appeared to complement the setting superbly, and it then became a game of what not to shoot! Had we not been getting a bit pushed for time we probably would have stayed there rather longer. And had we not been getting the urge for a coffee as well!

(Memo to self: Grey days, visit cemeteries!)

And of course I was on the lookout for scenes that would lend themselves to a bit of “tinkering”… given my newly-acquired taste for doing such. Yep, despite all my previous pooh-poohing of such notions. That’s me though… changeable! Bit like the weather really. Though I prefer the term “open-minded”. Well, after a respectable period of time at least. Heh heh

I love that last picture, the sky seems to really add ‘atmosphere’ to the shot.

I love that last picture, the sky seems to really add ‘atmosphere’ to the shot of the memorial, its fantastic

Aha, we have myway in stereo! ;)

Yeah, I think that worked quite well. There was a temptation to play around like this with some of the others from the cemetery batch as well… but I manfully resisted. After all one can have too much of a good thing.

So whilst I tinkered with a couple of them a bit more than I normally would (like adding a touch of vignetting), this was the only one I really went over the top with.

Gotta love that LCD screen? I’ve begun to take three or four different pictures with different light exposures so I end up getting the one I want on my computer.

The Bedford Cemetary pictures look great! The effect of the last one looks like it is right out of a scary movie.

Heh heh. Yep, it was the scary movie effect I sort of had in mind ;)

Well I really love the last picture ace…

The thing with the lcd is that you are looking at the rendered jpeg including any custom settings you have set; or manufacturers styles, so I always try and keep it on the neutral setting as it gives better understanding of what it will be like on the PC. The reason why, is that when you look at the histogram its reading from the jpeg, not the RAW file (a few cameras read the RAW file)

So any styles and custom settings are reflected in the histogram. To be really critical, I set up a custom setting with the contrast set right down with the saturation as well. Then when I look at the histogram I know what is in exposure range with the RAW file, and any colour shifts will also show up in the three colour RGB histogram and I can tell if any are being clipped at the left or right hand edges (if they are I have to shift the exposure) this later method is great for landscapes and difficult situations where exposure needs to be critical.
When on the PC, the RAW file will be able to handle a greater range of adjustments this way; so you can get it how you envisioned it in the first place :)

Super shots! Glad to see you “tinkering” with your photos. I like them all, but I have to say the first and last are my favorites.

    • fotdmike says:

Cheers Tam. Now I’ve started tinkering there’ll be no holding me! :)

That first one I really like too, though I didn’t at first. It seems to be one of those that grows on you. And curiously, its not one that has been tinkered with… other than a slight tweak to the fill light etc to help with the foreground detail. Nothing beyond what I’d consider reasonably standard though.

Clearly firing on all cylinders with the second and last photos, in my opinion.

And your tinkering was spot on.

Soon you’ll be saving up to purchase the whole Adobe Photoshop Suite!
