Earlier this year (beginning of January or thereabouts) I had a little session photographing the exterior of St Mary’s Church in Bedford.
Fascinating building… really old and lots of features to capture the eye.
Curiously its no longer used as a church but is occupied by Albion Archaeology.
Which led me to speculate on the chances of being able to get inside and take some more pics therein.
The idea’s periodically recurred but I can’t really say that I’d done anything to take it much further forward.
Until, that is, mate Darren and I discovered an interest in common (photography) with one of the guys that work there.
Well, it was inevitable what would happen. He “sounded out the ground” for us and, a couple of phone calls and a couple of weeks later, we’re in!
Great it was too. The folk who work there are real friendly and obliging. We got a bit of a guided tour and were then left to our own devices to shoot away.
Because of the size and layout of the interior (having been converted into a sort of “open office”) one has to work around what’s there and space doesn’t permit getting “proper” perspectives so to speak.
Undaunted though, I really like the angles and “distorted” perspectives I came away with and, overall, am fairly pleased with the results.
(There was one other little “problem”… but I’ll leave that for a future blogpost.)
The complete set on Flickr can be found here.

While reviewing said pictures on your Flickr stream it did cross my mind a few times as to how and/or why you were in the place at all.
I am now sufficiently illuminated, thank you.
Well, how we got in was on our feet, through the door. Why we were there was to take pics!
Must……control…..urge…..to……strangle……fotdmike…..
Whence cometh this strange desire of yours then? Surely it can’t have been prompted by anything I’ve said or done?
Clearly I was channeling Darren….
No doubt he’ll be enormously pleased to hear that.
