LifeSpy: Didn't say they were tripods [said sulkily]... but I still reckon they're useless. That said, I take your point about being essential kit on demos! ;)

Pleased you enjoy the blog. Its all your fault I started it anyway... inspired by that comment of yours on the very first "Adventures" post I did on my "yet another blog". See... I keep telling you that you've got a lot to answer for. ;)

forkboy: Yeah, reason I didn't try a higher ISO than my normal "range" is the very reason you mentioned... increased noise. Sure, I have a few ways of getting rid of a lot of noise in post processing, but generally I've found I don't really need to increase the ISO range for evening shots.

And again (though it chokes me to say so) I agree that noise can sometimes enhance certain pics.

Monopods a'int tripods Mike, they do a different job like holding heavy cameras and lenses with shaky old hands, like yours during good light...they 'may' help a little in low light by about a stop.

In use you also need to turn of shake reduction/VR/IS or whatever the camera manufactures call it as this hampers detail when using a tripod or monopod, even if its not needed in good light (plenty of it~) turning it off can improve image sharpness as it is vibrating in the camera/lens.

Monopods might become essential kit mind the way the cops are clamping down on photographers (to keep them at arms length of course)

Love reading your blog :)

I think you're right about monopods...not that they're complete rubbish, but that they are more for difficult daylight situations and not for night time stuff.

But your difficulties have me thinking about something that just occurred to me the other day. I had been considering a night time romp with the camera, but had great difficulty thinking of a place to go. Thinking about night time photography had me further contemplating shooting at a high ISO. So high that I would inevitably obtain plenty of noise in my images and then wondered if that might be cool in some manner? Or maybe with certain images?

This thinking of mine now comes full circle with your situation and leads me to ask: were you shooting at a higher ISO and if not, why not try a higher ISO?
