I don't profess to know how this whole systme works, but I'm guessing that folks who make software for editing RAW digital images might be backwards engineering the coding for said images and that may be where the problems come in with how the software converts the RAW file. It's just a guess on my part. Of course, I don't know why the camera makers wouldn't share the proprietary information with the software makers seeing how they are not competing with each other in any meaningful way. I don't know.....

My 40D came with ZoomBrowser EX for working with the RAW (CR2) files. I don't yet know if it also converts to JPEG, but the camera also came with some software named Digital Photo Professional which I have used almost exclusively for converting my edited RAW files to JPEGs.

Out of curiosity, have you tried any other RAW image editing software with your GX-20 images other than the software that came with the camera and Lightroom? It would be interesting to know how other programmes (like Elements, Capture One 4, etc.) would render your 20's images. Maybe this issue is more with Lightroom alone than anything else?

Well, on the basis of my own very recent experiences I'd have to (reluctantly) recommend sticking with proprietary software rather than going for Lightroom... unless there's some other need for it.
Yes, it might have extra features. And it might work very nicely. But one would have to question the wisdom of lashing out hard-to-spare dosh on a not-inexpensive program that'll need significant configuring before it'll do the same job as a freebie prog straight out the box.

Question though... is the app you've got with yours the same as the one that came with mine?

Great post. And it goes hand-in-hand with what I said the other day about the software that comes with the camera being the best for working with the camera's RAW files. I can understand the angst this issue generates in regards to the use of Lightroom (especially since Tamela just picked it up too).

Funny and oddly enough I have been printing the user's guide for the RAW file editor software that came with my 40D. I have also been playing with it a little bit and while it doesn't look as robust as either Capture One 4 or Elements 6.0 I'm wondering if it may yield better results with my 40D's RAW files (not that I've had any complaints with Capture One 4, but until I really try some work with the Canon software I won't know if it's better or worse, will I?

Tam, maybe you should hold off on sending me a copy of Lightroom ;-)

Yep, that's about right. I too had no problem importing. Which exlains the extreme feelings of stupidity I experienced when it was explained to me that the button right next to the Import one, the one marked Export, did - strange as it may seem - the reverse!
Clearly there's something not quite right with our mental processes!

This is a great post! I, like you, searched high and low for the "save as" button. Funny, I had no problem figuring out how to import the photos into Lightroom, but when it came to saving what I had worked on and putting them into a folder on my hard drive, I was stumped. Took me a few minutes to realize that if Import was the first step, perhaps export was the final. :)
