Well well well… it would appear that some folk in the building adjacent the Bear’s back yard (um… “beer garden”) have recently complained of incidents of a dubious nature occurring in their car park. Things like auto break-ins and suchlike, I believe.
And they’re alleging that Bear customers are responsible!
Or at least, people climbing over the wall from the Bear into their car park.
Consequently, they’ve erected masses of barbed wire to keep us unsavoury lot out!
Hmm… more in this than meets the eye methinks.
(Its not even as if barbed wire is an especially effective deterrent… as some of my activist friends could testify!)
(Note: for those unfamiliar with my wanderings, The Bear is the most favoured haunt of yours truly when in Bedford)

I’m certain it’s someone from Luton. You know what they say about folks from Luton. Well, I hope you do as I have no idea of what I’m talking about.
D’you know, you’re probably right! Compared to Luton, Bedford’s an absolute paradise… and you know what I think about Bedford
HA HA.
I like Bedford. I’ve seen very lovely photos of Bedford.
Actually, I think I do know a bit about what I’m talking about….I had heard from other English sources that Luton is….well…let’s just say it is a less-than-desirable place to spend a weekend.
Spend a weekend? You wouldn’t want to spend an hour there!
Can’t imagine where you’ve seen those Tam. All I know is, most of the time I’ve been here (getting on for 18 years now!) has been spent in dreaming up schemes to get away from the place!
Are you sure you live in Bedford and not in my town? I dream of the day we move from here. Being born and then have lived on the west coast…then living in CO and SD… I wonder what in the world am I still doing HERE??
Really, Bedford looks nice (your photos are really great).
Admittedly Bedford does have some reasonably pleasant places to visit… providing one doesn’t mind running the risk of being abused, mugged, or worse!
But no matter how nice the locations may appear in photographs they really aren’t a patch on where I originally come from… and I just can’t help making comparisons (perhaps unfairly… and maybe through rose-tinted spectacles).
So to be fair, Bedford as a geographic area has much to offer, and of course it has a rather rich history.
The real fly in the ointment isn’t the place itself, but the attitude that seems to prevail amongst many of its inhabitants.
Consequently I always look forward to those excursions I make away from the place, for its then as though I am once again re-entering the “real world”, where values such as basic courtesy, politeness, and a simple open-minded friendliness seem much more the norm.
This does have its upside though. For when one does (on those all too infrequent occasions) encounter someone who demonstrates an ability to interact socially it makes the experience so much more enjoyable and, in some curious way, meaningful.
