Testing the new lens

(More photos from the test in this Flickr set)

Went walkabout along Bedford High Street today to give the new lens a bit of a better workout than the first time (see previous post on this).

Every shot was doubled up, one with IS (Image Stabilisation) on, the other with it off so that I could compare results. Not entirely happy, but certainly a lot more satisfactory than before… well… encouraging anyway.

Next test will be on full zoom though, which is where I seemed to hit most of the problems.

Also, its been suggested to me that having a filter attached to the lens may have a detrimental effect. Now, I use either a UV or Skylight filter on all my lenses, principally as a protection for the lens itself. Hitherto I’ve not discerned any negative impact and (since that suggestion was made) I’ve scoured the web for relevant articles. Found a few but none of them gave any hint that there could be problems with using filters on digital cameras (that being the precise nature of the suggestion). If anything, quite the reverse.
Nevertheless, always up for a bit of playing around, I’ll then try to do a similar series of shots but without the filter.

So watch this space!
